Alton To Honor Miles Davis With Statue

Plans to honor Alton native and jazz great Miles Davis with a statue were announced Saturday night at the 2012 Miles Davis Jazz Festival.

Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst unveiled the plan to put a life-sized statue in the heart of Downtown’s entertainment district on Third Street.

The Alton Museum of History and Art and the Miles Davis Jazz Committee are working in partnership with Pride Inc. and the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The initial concept for the statue is that it most likely will mirror the renowned trumpeter’s sinuous pose featured on the commemorative stamp set to be issued on June 12 in New York City, said Charlene Gill, founder and president emeritus of the Alton museum.

“Right now, we’re in the initial stages of planning and fund-raising,” committee chairman Abe Lee Barham said. “We want the entire community to be excited and involved in the project.”
