Miles Davis Inspires New Dance Project

Carrie Seidman, of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, writes:

Ballet icon George Balanchine’s dictate that one should “see the music, hear the dance” will play out creatively this weekend when Fuzión Dance Artists and Jazz Juvenocracy combine forces to present “The Miles Project,” a tribute to jazz musician Miles Davis.

The respected group of six young local jazz musicians will cover 13 of Davis’ works, six of which will be accompanied by dance. The idea is for the music — everything from calypso to flamenco, Afro-Caribbean to blues, and even a Michael Jackson tune — to be personified in the movement.

“I want to bring in the jazz people who think jazz is cool and the dancers who think dance is cool and introduce them to each other,” says Lisa Risner, the group’s program coordinator. “That’s the great thing about collaboration.”
